Perfect Record Dies By Inches
The Unluckies, Aptly Named

Staff Report · The Chronicle Desk
Tom Pauza defeated Donald Hefferon by a single point on Sunday, 74.0 to 73.0. The league's own ledger records that of the 1,158 games ever played, only nine were closer. Hefferon came in at 5-0 and goes out at 5-1, holding a share of first place and absolutely nothing else worth the drive home.
Neither roster distinguished itself. Pauza is 4-2 with only one manager in the competition having scored fewer points, a feat he manages by conceding fewer than anybody else, 506.0 against through six weeks. Not Today Satan does not outscore opponents so much as outlast them, week after week, like a siege.
Hefferon, for his part, has 725.0 points for, fourth most in the league, and the dubious honour of a team name that has now been ratified by the results service. The Unluckies lost by one. A single rounding of a single stat line, anywhere across nine starters, and the unbeaten run survives the weekend intact.
The table is tighter for it. Hefferon keeps a share of the lead at 5-1, Pauza climbs to 4-2 and sits a game back with the rest of the chasing pack. One point on a quiet October afternoon, and the best record in the league is suddenly a thing that can be caught.
Francis Reaches One Hundred
Matt Francis recorded the hundredth win of his career, regular season and playoffs combined, beating Sam Wadhams 123.5 to 103.0. Malik Nabers supplied 27.0 of it. The milestone arrives, as these things do, in a routine week against a man already having a poor season.
Francis leads the league in points for with 776.5 and is nonetheless 3-3, two games back. Wadhams falls to 2-4 with 793.5 points against, the second most conceded in the competition. One of them has a century. The other has a schedule.
